SPEED GRABS SIXTH BACK-TO-BACK WIN OF THE YEAR!

Lowe's Motor Speedway (10/27/00) -- Speed seems unstoppable this season, grabbing back-to-back wins for the sixth time, while shattering the record for the most wins in a season with 13!

Coyote, who started from the outside pole, grabbed the lead on lap 1 and led a race-high total of 39 laps, earning the 5 extra bonus points for only the 5th time this year. After starting from the 4th position, Speed quickly moved into 2nd behind teammate Coyote, and eventually was able to pass him for the lead, but only held it for 3 laps before allowing Coyote back by.

During one of the 2 early caution flags caused by Stenzo wrecking, Speed pitted for fresh rubber, and on lap 27, restarted 17th and was forced to work his way through the traffic, while Coyote held onto the lead. Bob and Stenzo restarted at the rear of the pack in 23rd and 25th respectively, with Stenzo already 5 laps down with a heavily damaged car.

By lap 34, Speed had worked his way up to 10th, and by lap 40, was up to 8th. Meanwhile, Bob had moved up to 17th, but was mired in heavy traffic, desperately searching for the right line to get past the other cars. On lap 48, Coyote scraped the wall coming out of turn 2 and lost the lead to the 6 car, who had been dogging him relentlessly for several laps. Speed continued his march toward the front, and by lap 52 had passed the 4 car for 3rd.

On lap 55, Stenzo got into the right rear quarter panel of the 7 car in turns 3 and 4 to bring out the 3rd caution flag, just as Bob was passing the 2 car for the 10th spot. Meanwhile, on lap 56, Coyote went high in turn 2 to let Speed by to take 2nd. While under caution, all the leaders pitted, and Speed, Coyote, and Bob each left their pits at about the same time in a drag-race down pit road side-by-side. Speed squeezed through several cars and returned to the track in 6th with Bob in 8th, while Coyote got pinched into the pit wall by the 18 car in a pile-up at the end of pit road, wrinkling his front bumper. Then he tangled with the other Gibbs car (number 20), and returned to the track in 9th. But because he had damage, he had to come back around and pit again to get it repaired. During all of this, the 20 car was limping around the track, holding up 13 cars, including the pace car and all the leaders, as he slowly worked his way back around the track to the pits, just as the field was lined up for the restart.

On lap 61, Bob tangled with the 36 car and spun into the wall, damaging his rear bumper. But because the spin held up all the other cars behind him, he was able to maintain 9th position, despite falling back over 20 seconds behind the leader. By lap 73, Speed was up to 4th, but because he scraped the wall at the start/finish line, the 88 car was able to move to his inside in turn 1 to challenge for the position. Speed then swept across the front of the 88 car, causing it to spin into the 40 car to start a chain reaction that led to a 6-car pile-up that brought out the 4th caution flag of the day. Meanwhile, Coyote barely avoided the melee and got by to grab 5th, while Speed fell to 6th, with Bob in 10th. During the ensuing caution period, Speed and Stenzo both pitted, with Speed coming out in 12th and Stenzo in 23rd, 14 laps down. On lap 74, while running under yellow, Bob's motor let go and dumped oil all over the track, which took several more laps to clean up.

The race restarted on lap 78, and Speed quickly moved up to 9th, and by lap 80, Coyote had moved up to 4th and Speed to 7th. On lap 82, Coyote passed the 6 car to take 3rd, while Speed was fighting hard to get a run on the 24 car, briefly passing him on the outside of turn 3 to take 6th, but couldn't hold it. On lap 91 he finally got by, then promptly passed the 36 car on lap 92 to take 5th.

On lap 96, Coyote tapped the rear bumper of the 7 car in the dogleg, sending Coyote down low and into the grass, while Speed zipped past the 6 car and Coyote to take 3rd. The 1 car and the 2 car both got tangled up with the spinning 7 car, which brought out the 5th yellow flag of the event on lap 97.

The race restarted on lap 100, and Speed darted past the 99 car to take 2nd as the pack thundered into turn 1. Coyote got pinched on the outside by the lapped 43 car, then scraped the wall exiting turn 2, slowing his momentum briefly as he headed down the backstretch. Meanwhile, Speed had a run on the 4 car, and grabbed the lead as they exited turn 4, while Coyote muscled by the 99 car to take 3rd.

On lap 102, Stenzo got into the side of the 88 car exiting turn 2, and spun hard into the inside wall, bringing out the 6th and final caution flag of the day. He pitted to repair the damage and returned to the track in 21st, 23 laps down, where he eventually finish.

The race restarted on lap 106, and Coyote made a daring move on the outside, pushing it three wide at the stripe to pass the 4 car for 2nd, while Speed pulled away over the final 10 laps to win by a margin of 1.6 seconds.

Speed ended up leading a total of 19 laps, marking the 22nd of 29 races this season he's led at least 1 lap, easily explaining why he's earned the most bonus points this year with 155. He now has an incredible 13 wins, 17 top 5s, and 19 top 10s in 29 races, and has pulled away in the points standings to an insurmountable 517-point lead over second place Stenzo, virtually locking up the series championship with 5 races left to go in the season.

With his 2nd place finish, Coyote now has 9 top 5s and 13 top 10s, and closed to within 86 points of Stenzo in the series points standings, maintaining 3rd place by 127 points over Bob.

With only 213 points separating Stenzo, Coyote, and Bob in the standings, the final 5 races should be a very exciting battle for second place, so don't you dare miss it!
