SPEED WRECKS WHILE LEADING WITH ONLY 5 TO GO!

Darlington Raceway (10/6/00) -- Speed had his 10th win of the year signed and sealed, but couldn't quite get it delivered as he got into a lap car while trying to pass, wrecking and seriously damaging his car. He ended up falling from 1st to 15th with only 5 laps to go, which allowed Coyote to lead the Team Speedlan boys to the checkers with a 12th place finish.

Bob qualified on the outside pole, and quickly got out front to lead a total of 9 laps. But shortly into the race, Stenzo wrecked his car, bringing out 2 quick cautions, under which Bob relinquished the lead in order to pit for fresh tires and fuel, along with teammates Speed and Coyote. By lap 18, Bob was 21st, Speed 23rd, Coyote 24th, and Stenzo 25th. On lap 26, Bob had worked his way back up to 18th when Speed tapped the 2 car entering turn 3, then bounced off the 1 car and spun, collecting Coyote (see photo above), who managed to push his way by to take the 23rd spot, while Stenzo also passed Speed to grab 24th as the third caution flag came out to slow the field. Many drivers elected to pit, and Stenzo came out 12th, Bob 14th, and Coyote 15th, while Speed came out 25th after pitting a second time to make unfinished repairs to his car.

The race restarted on lap 31 with Stenzo dropping low to the inside to allow the faster cars to get safely by. Then on lap 33, he got into the wall in turn 2, allowing Speed to pass him, the 2 car, and the 4 car, moving up to 22nd, while Bob made his way past three cars to take 10th. Meanwhile, Coyote got past the 31 and 12 cars to take 12th. By lap 37 Bob had moved up to 8th, when he forced it 3-wide heading into turn 3, cutting off the 99 car and causing the 88 and 3 cars to check up, leaving Coyote nowhere to go as he got into the back of the 88 car, who spun up and into the wall, taking the 3 car along with him, which brought out the fourth caution of the day on lap 37. In the process of making the dangerous move, Bob downshifted while trying to save himself from wrecking, blowing his motor and promptly ending his day with his first DNF of the year.

The race restarted again on lap 42, with Coyote in 8th and Speed in 21st, while Stenzo, who was already 2 laps down, dropped low to the inside again to let the other cars get by. Coyote was racing hard with the 12 and 18 cars, swapping positions back and forth, until he was solidly able to reclaim 8th place once again on lap 48.

At the halfway point at lap 64, Coyote was up to 6th place and was running very well and catching the leaders. Speed was in 18th and was working hard to catch the 94 car, finally making the pass on lap 69 to grab 17th. On lap 70, Stenzo got into the wall in turn 3 and 4, causing the cars on the high side to slow, which allowed Coyote to take the inside lane to get past three cars and take 3rd place. Unfortunately, on the next lap, he drove too deep into turn 3 and got up into the wall, which slowed him dramatically, allowing Speed to move up to 11th while he fell back to 13th. Over the next 5 laps (72-76), Speed was on a tear, passing 5 cars to take over the 6th spot, when the 4th place car pitted, putting him back into the top 5 on lap 76. Coyote also pitted on lap 76, where he gave up 12th place, dropping him down to 19th, almost two laps down. On lap 93, he got tangled up with the leader (20 car) while trying to keep from going a second lap down, when he spun 360 degrees, saved it, but clipped the front of the 20 again, spun 360 degrees again, and saved it again, managing to stay in front of the 20 car the whole time. Meanwhile, as the lead pack slowed for the spinning Coyote, Speed was catching up, when he dove to the inside of the slower cars to grab the lead as the caution flag flew for the 5th time, allowing Coyote to go back around to stay only one lap down.

The race restarted on lap 97 with Speed in the lead, Coyote on the inside one lap down in 17th, and Stenzo many laps down in 24th. At the drop of the green, Coyote moved to the inside of the 103 car to take 16th, then by lap 100, had passed Speed to get back on the lead lap, where he slowly pulled away from the leaders. On lap 117, Speed scraped the wall in turns 3 and 4 trying to pass the 103 car on the outside. Five laps later on lap 122, he tapped the left rear corner of the 103 car while exiting turn 2, spinning himself sideways and hard into the inside wall, then spun half way down the backstretch, bringing out the 6th and final caution of the race with only 5 laps to go, falling back to 15th place in the process. Coyote was then allowed to circle the track and catch back up with the rest of the cars on the lead lap, while Speed pitted to repair the extensive damage to his car.

The race restarted on lap 126 with only 2 laps to go, with Coyote in 15th and Speed in 16th, the last car on the lead lap. Coyote got a great jump and quickly moved to the outside of the 12 car immediately after the green flag fell, taking the 14th spot, then roared to the inside of the 20 car and 99 car in turns 1 and 2 to grab 12th. But because he tapped the rear bumper of the 4 car as he exited turn 2, he got a little sideways and had to lift for just for a moment to gather it back up, falling back to 14th in the process. However, the determined Coyote would not give up, and by the time he got to turns 3 and 4, he had already worked back underneath the 20 and 99 cars again to reclaim 12th, and was moving alongside the 4 car in a drag race to the checkered flag, falling just half a car-length short of grabbing 11th place.

Although Speed seems to have a tight grip on the series points lead, the points battle is definitely heating up as we head into the home stretch. With his 12th place finish, Coyote reduced the points gap between himself and third-place Bob to only 78 points with 10 races left to go.
