COYOTE CLAIMS FIRST WIN OF 2000!

Texas Motor Speedway (4/14/00) -- Coyote returned to winning form today, outdistancing the hard-charging Stenzo to capture his first win of the SPEEDLAN 2000 season! After qualifying 2nd for the 3rd race in a row, he led 49 of 116 laps, swapping the lead back and forth with Stenzo, Speed, and Marlin eight times. After taking on 4 tires under caution, he reclaimed the lead from Stenzo and managed to hold on for his second win and third top 10 in 3 races here at Texas Motor Speedway.

Stenzo, who qualified a season-high 3rd, quickly challenged Coyote for the lead early in the event, passing him for position on his way to capturing 5 bonus points for leading the most laps (57 of 116). The race ran under green until Bob, at the end of his fuel run, quickly darted onto pit road, but was unable to avoid hitting another pitting car, and brought out the first of 3 caution flags. He stopped and pitted, but later learned the pits were already closed due to the yellow flag coming out, and was penalized and forced to restart at the end of the longest line, putting him a lap down. Meanwhile, Speed, who had slid into the wall after an altercation with another driver earlier in the race, had already pitted and fallen a lap down when the caution came out, and stayed on the track to restart at the tail end of the lead lap, directly in front of the leaders. Stenzo led the field onto pit road, where he gambled on only 2 tires while all the others took 4, and remained in the lead when the race went back green. However, this quickly proved to be the wrong combination, as his car became extremely loose, and he turned the lead back over to Coyote and slid back to 14th position. Another caution flag soon came out, and Stenzo was able to pit for the other two tires he desperately needed, while Speed was able to make up his lap, and the two restarted the race in 19th and 21st positions respectively. With only 37 laps to go when the race restarted, Stenzo was determined to get to the front, and quickly began passing cars. He was slipping and sliding through the frontstretch grass, using the apron, and driving wherever he could to pass, many times very narrowly missing the other cars, but managed to muscle his way back into 2nd place, and was quickly gaining on Coyote when the checkered flag fell, finishing only .568 seconds behind. Speed also worked his way back through the field and into the top 10, trying very hard to avoid all the cars in the wake of “wild driving” Stenzo, but got caught up in the traffic and finished 16th. Bob finished 19th and protested his penalty, but after viewing the replay, conceded that he must've simply made a “rookie mistake”.
